Blackface is a style of theatricalmakeup that originated in the United States, used to take on the appearance of certain archetypes of American racism, especially those of the "happy-go-lucky darky on the plantation" or the "dandifiedcoon". The darky icon itself—googly-eyed, with inky skin; exaggerated white, pink or red lips; and bright, white teeth—became a common motif in entertainment, children's literature, mechanical banks and other toys and games of all sorts, cartoons and comic strips, advertisements, jewelry, textiles, postcards, sheet music, food branding and packaging, and other consumer goods.

( we've brought it back again! )
Francoise Bornet and her then boyfriend agreed to pose for the seemingly spontaneous photo in 1950.
The photo went on to become a poster icon around the world.
Romantics like to believe the young lovers were captured in a spontaneous moment of bliss, but the pose was staged.
The picture, Kiss by the Hotel de Ville, sold for 155,000 euros (£105,000) - more than 10 times what it was expected to fetch in April 2005.
The photo was posed, but the kiss was real.

(Le Baiser de l'Hotel de Ville)
`Then you should say what you mean,' the March Hare went on.
`I do,' Alice hastily replied; `at least--at least I mean what I say--that's the same thing, you know.'
`Not the same thing a bit!' said the Hatter. `You might just as well say that "I see what I eat" is the same thing as "I eat what I see"!'
`You might just as well say,' added the March Hare, `that "I like what I get" is the same thing as "I get what I like"!'
`You might just as well say,' added the Dormouse, who seemed to be talking in his sleep, `that "I breathe when I sleep" is the same thing as "I sleep when I breathe"!'
`It is the same thing with you,' said the Hatter, and here the conversation dropped, and the party sat silent for a minute.
( a cordial tea reception by the papayamilkshop )
`Why should it?' muttered the Hatter. `Does your watch tell you what year it is?'
